Family Worship

The Family Worship Guide

One of the reasons we often don't get into a routine of Family Worship, or Family Devotional time, is we just don't have an easy place to begin. At AAC, we've provided a few options for our families to do just this.

The one I've been pushing the most is Get Into the Story. Get Into the Story is our family worship guide which provides Bible reading and discussion ideas which follow our Sunday school lessons. If you haven't given it a try, start here!

Another, which was just realeased earlier this year, is the Family Worship Guide site. What's great about this resource is that it provides Bible reading, prayer, musical worship, Bible memory, and catechism resources every day. If you're looking for a solid place to begin, head over there and check it out.

Do-Able Devotions

From the Life2getherblog:

“Are we done yet, dad?” “Can I get up?” “Is this it?” “I am thirsty, can I get a drink?” “Can I use the bathroom?”

These are some of the questions and responses that I get from my children as we have our family devotion time. This experience is quite humbling and at times very humorous, but we believe it to be an important part in our family life. I would encourage all us to carve out time at least weekly where we sit down as a family and read the Bible, make age-appropriate application, pray and sing together as an intricate part of family life. No, this is not the method above all methods to get our children to turn out right. Our hope is NOT in a method (and I need to be reminded of this often), but it is in God! Family devotions is one of the means that God has given us to know and love Him, but it is not the end. We want our children to get God, NOT just turn out right!

Another Form of Family Worship, and it Works With 5 Kids!

The Codex Gigas from the 13th century, held at... Image via Wikipedia One of my favorite (albeit controversial) pastors to follow is Mark Driscoll of Seattle's Mars Hill Church. He and his wife have 5 kids. If they can pull off family devotions, what excuse do I have? Here's a bit of insight from their dinner table: Some months ago we started a new tradition at the Driscoll dining table that has also been a blessing. Whoever is taking their turn setting the table ensures that our “dinner Bible,” as the kids call it, is sitting in front of “Poppa Daddy,” as the kids call me. Throughout the course of our dinner together, we chat about how the day went, how everyone is doing, and whom we can pray for, and we discuss a section of Scripture. Over the years we have always made it a point to read Scripture to the children when they were little (especially at bed time), and help them develop personal daily Bible reading habits once they learned to read for themselves. read more »

Advent Family Devotional

the completed advent calendar Image by aesop via Flickr We're going to take a bit of a break from the Get Into the Story Family Devotionals during Advent. This being one of the two big seasons of our church calendar, it's important to reflect this in our family life. There are many great resources for families to use during Advent. A few are listed on the AAC website. Another one I ran across came from Christ the King Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. It contains a short devotional including a song for each weekday this Advent. Whichever resource you decide to use, I hope each family is able to make this season one of those stand-out times of year.  read more »
